There were three basic types of children who came to visit. The very small ones, who were too young to understand who Santa was, looked at me with distrust, needing a push from a parent or teacher to approach me. Once on my lap they would have little to say, and sometimes they’d scream in terror at the sight of this outlandishly dressed, ancient man. Others immediately established themselves on my lap: children who looked upon me as the true Santa, though of course when pressed I would say that I was merely a Santa's helper. It was a pleasure to hold these children and watch their faces, nervous and happy all at once...

Finally, there were older children who were still young enough to sit on my lap, but who were too old to believe in Santa. They would smile at me smugly, as if we shared a secret. and there was boredom in their voices when they recited their wish list, for they knew that my power over what they might receive was a fiction. I grew wary of these children, for they were the ones capable of pulling Santa's beard. Sometimes I would lightly lock my arms around such a child, at the same time swaying in order to disguise the gentle restraint.

Penguin sweaters:

Skeinz, a yarn store in New Zealand, is calling on knitters throughout the world to knit sweaters for the penguins affected by a massive oil spill that occurred earlier this month. The tiny sweaters, while eliciting aww's and squee's, serve a very important function: they prevent the oil-soaked birds from poisoning themselves by preening, as well as keeping them warm before it's their turn to be cleaned up by cleanup workers. And, you know, who doesn't want to save the lives of penguins by dressing them in the most adorable way possible?

The yarn store was inundated and no longer needs sweaters.

It was very rare for you to miss art activities. Most often you inspired other children to join the art activity. Some kids spent 2 minutes on their project and left. A few minutes later they came back and continued working on their art because you were spending 15-20 minutes on your art!

I'll never forget your penguin sound, your silly talk, and the way you so carefully arranged your toys when you played with them. But whenever another kid came along and messed up your elaborate scenario, you'd just burn a hole through them with your eyes, say nothing, and go right back to what you were doing.

Kenny:

Why are the silly children so hard to say goodbye to? Probably because you were the perfect excuse for me to act non-sensically. I remember your early years and wondering, "What will become of this gentle little lamb?" I was delightfully surprised to see the goofiest child the Elm Tree has seen in my years emerge while maintaining your initial sweetness. Watch out, wide world, for Lola is now loosed from the Elm Tree and on the prowl.

Lola and I had some wonderful times on our first explorations of Chicago together.
